The Pollocksville Kayak Launch opened in a small ribbon cutting on May 8th, 2021. Just in time for summer, the ADA compliant launch creates a new access point along the Trent River for paddlers with physical disabilities. This amenity allows paddlers to traverse the middle Trent. A quiet tributary downriver, called Mill Creek, can only be explored by paddle, and deserves to be for the wealth of wildlife among the narrow banks. If you come out to paddle soon, you may be able to catch the cobalt blue Barn Swallows in their mud nest colony under the Trent River Bridge. A flock of curious birds dart expertly in this area during April and May, and they swirled overhead as Mayor Bender and Commissioner Henderson spoke some words, cut the ribbon and invited the County Parks and Recreation Director, David Mallard, to take the first paddle! This installation marks the completion of an initiative started before Hurricane Florence, using funding from the General Assembly's Downtown Revitalization grant and the Town's Beautification account, which is paid by property taxes.
